7 Tips That Can Help Your Career

When I was just starting out after graduating from college, the mindset at the time was that you needed a college degree to get into the door for a good job. In many ways this was simply not true. Looking back, I put so much pressure on myself in academics but was severely lacking in real world skills which rendered my “degree” basically worthless. I’m not sure if others may have felt this way after college but now looking back, there are seven KEY areas that can drive your future success that are much, much, more important than you realize. If you work on these areas, you’ll be light years ahead on your road to achieving your dreams.

  1. Communication skills - Learning how to speak in front of groups, communicate effectively and how to put your thoughts into writing are vital for your future.

  2. Strategic thinking and problem solving - You have to think ten steps ahead, anticipate outcomes and plan ahead. Finding solutions to problems with creative ideas is a highly valuable skill.

  3. Ability to learn and grasp new concepts and skills quickly - You won’t know everything and you have to learn new skills and concepts fast. Many times it will have to be self-directed and on your own.

  4. Networking - You have to learn to build your network. Focus on those who are successful or striving to be. If you want to elevate your career and life, hang around and associate with those who are like minded in their goals.

  5. Basic finance and math - Learn to manage your money effectively, save, invest, spend less than you take in and grow your financial aptitude.

  6. Ability to sell - Selling ideas, products, solutions and even your talent is key. Learning to be confident and passionate about things and sell value is a skill that never loses importance.

  7. Real life experience - Nothing beats doing the work. Getting in the trenches, doing the job and learning in real life is superior to simple book smarts. Experience matters. Get as much as you can.
