In an era when people bury their faces in their smart phones when out in public, basic communication skills seem to be a lost art. People today encounter store employees and customer service reps who grunt a word or two, all the while completely avoiding eye contact.

Technology has done wonders when it comes to knowledge at our fingertips. At the same time, though, society’s ability to communicate on a face-to-face level has seemed to devolve into a world where customer service and general friendliness is such a rarity that when you actually encounter it you’re taken by surprise.

The fact of the matter is you can tout the importance of a college degree and higher education all day long, but if you can’t master basic communication and people skills it’s a big waste of time and money.

In a recent documentary on Warren Buffett, it was pointed out that he proudly displays his certificate from the Andrew Carnegie class on public speaking instead of his college degrees. Why? Because the public speaking classes, in a way, meant more to him. Public speaking and great communication teach one how to engage a group, convey ideas, collaborate, and instill excitement among others. All skills which can enhance your career and push you in an upward direction.

The point is clear, effective communication skills makes a difference. Those without these skills will find it extremely difficult to move ahead and succeed.

So, remember, if you want to be someone who is driving toward success you have to polish and elevate your ability to communicate.
